Bold vision for medical research as new WA Clinical Trials Roadmap unveiled

WA’s first Clinical Trials Roadmap was launched by Medical Research Minister, Stephen Dawson, ahead of International Clinical Trials Day on 20 May.
Developed through extensive consultation, the WA Clinical Trials Roadmap sets out an ambitious plan to build a thriving, innovative, competitive clinical trials ecosystem, that will give Western Australians access to world-class clinical trials as part of routine care.
An essential component of high-performing health systems, clinical trials – where cutting-edge new approaches to treatment, diagnosis and prevention can be tested – drive continuous improvement in healthcare.
The Roadmap identifies WA’s unique opportunities to increase access to clinical trials for Western Australians, unlock the state’s potential as a destination for clinical trials, enable the sector to export opportunities nationally and internationally, and improve sustainability of the WA health system. Key opportunities include:
- embedding clinical trials in routine clinical care
- supporting and growing the clinical trials workforce
- empowering consumers to access clinical trials and be involved in their design
- connecting the ecosystem through digital innovation, world-class infrastructure and integrated systems
- growing the visibility and reputation of the WA clinical trials ecosystem.
Increasing WA’s clinical trials capacity, and improving access to these trials, has the potential to save lives and transform the quality of life of WA patients and their families.
For people with rare diseases, and those who have exhausted all treatment options, clinical trials offer hope of a better future.
