Translation
Research translation and commercialisation bridges the gap between academic discoveries and real-world applications. In Western Australia, Government programs, support organisations and facilities are available to support the translation and commercialisation of health and medical research.
The Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation (JTSI) oversees economic development, trade, investment, tourism, and innovation initiatives. JTSI plays a crucial role in shaping Western Australia’s commercial future and establishing a robust, diverse economy. It is also responsible for supporting research and development, attracting investment in Western Australian innovation, and creating linkages across government agencies and between industry, research and academic organisations at local, national and international levels.
Connect with the translation and commercialisation sector
MTPConnect is an independent, not-for-profit organisation formed in 2015 by the Australian Government to champion the continuing growth of Australia's vibrant medical products sector, which includes medical technologies, biotechnologies and pharmaceuticals.
MTPConnect forges stronger connections between research and industry to help maximize opportunities for Australians to not only make scientific and technological breakthroughs, but to see them developed through the proof-of-concept stage and successfully translated and commercialised.
The Centre for Entrepreneurial Research and Innovation (CERI) was created by the Bass Family as an innovation hub to support Western Australian businesses in their medical research endeavours and beyond. CERI’s programs are designed to offer a comprehensive pathway through the startup formation process, from idea to commercialisation.
The Western Australian Health Translation Network (WAHTN) is a statewide collaborative network of WA’s universities, medical research institutes, public and private hospitals, PathWest and the WA Department of Health. WAHTN advances the translation of evidence-based health and medical research into changes in policy, practice, training and innovation, to benefit the health and wellbeing of all Western Australians.
There are several state-funded Innovation Hubs in WA that offer collaborative facilities, shared spaces and use of technologies to bring together innovators and entrepreneurs across the state.
WA Creative Tech Hub

Health and medical research translation pipeline
The health and medical research translation pipeline is a vital process that bridges the gap between scientific discovery and clinical application. This pipeline ensures that research findings are effectively transformed into healthcare practices, policies, treatments, or products that enhance patient outcomes and public health.
As depicted above, the translation pipeline spans from ideation to implementation, progressing through stages of discovery, development, and adoption. This process is crucial for the continuous improvement of healthcare and the development of innovative solutions to health challenges.
