New legislation to support responsible data sharing
Western Australia’s Privacy and Responsible Information Sharing Act 2024 (PRIS Act) commences on 1 July 2026 and will impact researchers.
Western Australia’s Privacy and Responsible Information Sharing Act 2024 (PRIS Act) will strengthen accountability and transparency in how government handles data.
Reflecting a broader commitment to privacy, transparency, and innovation, the PRIS Act will:
- set clear principles and standards for how government agencies collect, use, store, and share personal information.
- allow agencies to share information only if they follow clear principles for risk, decision-making, and transparency.
- ensure Aboriginal people are involved when sharing data that affects Aboriginal people and communities.
For researchers, Part 3 of the PRIS Act introduces a new pathway to access data while maintaining strong safeguards for personal information.
This pathway may be used by researchers who meet the Act’s requirements, where existing laws currently restrict access.
To support implementation of the new legislation, the roles of Information Commissioner (external site) and Chief Data Officer (external site) have been established. Their agencies will develop and issue guidelines and privacy codes of practice, with practical resources and regular updates to be made available online in coming months.
As WA transitions to this new framework, researchers are encouraged to stay informed and engaged.
