A Western Australian medical technology company is progressing the clinical development of a novel breast cancer imaging technology, highlighting the strength of the State’s health and medical research and innovation ecosystem.

Perth‑based company OncoRes Medical recently announced a significant private investment round to support the next phase of clinical trials and regulatory milestones for its Quantitative Micro‑Elastography (QME) imaging system, Elora™. The technology is designed to assist surgeons during breast‑conserving surgery by providing real‑time information to help identify and remove cancerous tissue more accurately.

Clinical trials of the Elora™ system are currently underway across multiple hospitals in Western Australia and Victoria, marking the first interventional use of the technology in a clinical setting. The trials aim to assess the system’s ability to improve surgical decision‑making and reduce the need for repeat operations, which remain a challenge for many women undergoing breast‑conserving surgery.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women, and repeat surgery can have significant physical, emotional and financial impacts on patients and the health system. Innovations that support more precise surgery have the potential to improve patient outcomes and reduce pressure on hospital resources.

OncoRes Medical’s progress reflects the close collaboration between researchers, clinicians and industry that underpins Western Australia’s health and medical research environment. The company originated from research conducted in Western Australia and continues to work closely with clinicians and health services as it advances its technology from the laboratory into real‑world clinical use.

The recent investment will support ongoing clinical trials, further product development and preparation for future regulatory pathways, including international markets. It also demonstrates growing confidence from private investors in WA‑developed medical technologies with global potential.

Examples such as OncoRes Medical illustrate how health and medical research and innovation in Western Australia can translate into tangible clinical impact, while also attracting external investment and contributing to the State’s broader life sciences sector.

Western Australia continues to play a key role in supporting the translation of research into practical health solutions, helping to improve patient care while strengthening the State’s reputation as a centre for health and medical innovation.
