Australia unites behind first Medical Research Giving Day

Australians are being invited to stand behind the discoveries, treatments and breakthroughs that improve lives as part of the nation's first-ever Medical Research Giving Day on 9 September 2026.

The national initiative brings together 31 medical research institutes from across Australia for a shared day of fundraising and awareness, highlighting the vital role community support plays in advancing medical research. The campaign is supported by the Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes (AAMRI).

Medical research has transformed countless lives through new medicines, diagnostic tools, therapies and treatments. Yet every breakthrough begins long before it reaches a patient, requiring years of research, expertise, infrastructure and sustained investment.

Under the campaign theme "Be a Hero. Support Medical Research", Australians are being encouraged to recognise the role they can play in supporting discoveries that lead to better health outcomes for individuals, families and communities. The campaign's message is simple: you do not need a lab coat to help save lives.

Medical Research Giving Day aims to shine a spotlight on the researchers working to tackle some of Australia's biggest health challenges while also raising awareness of the importance of philanthropy in accelerating new discoveries. Participating institutes represent a broad range of research disciplines and are united by a shared goal of improving health through research.

The initiative provides an opportunity for communities across Australia to learn more about the impact of medical research and the many ways people can support the work being undertaken by the nation's research institutes.

Medical Research Giving Day will take place on Wednesday 9 September 2026.
