WA launches roadmap to eliminate rheumatic heart disease by 2036
The WA Government has released the WA Rheumatic Heart Disease Strategic Framework 2026-2036, setting out a coordinated statewide approach to eliminate new cases of rheumatic heart disease (RHD) in Western Australia by 2036.
RHD is a preventable condition that continues to have a significant impact on the health and wellbeing of many Western Australians, particularly Aboriginal people and communities. The new Framework outlines a shared vision for Aboriginal-led prevention, equitable access to care and stronger collaboration across the health system.
Developed through extensive consultation, the Framework incorporates the expertise and experiences of Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services, clinicians, researchers, government agencies, health service providers and community representatives. It provides a practical roadmap for health professionals, researchers, service providers and communities to work together to improve prevention, strengthen access to culturally safe care and achieve better health outcomes.
The Framework aligns with the national RHD Endgame Strategy and focuses on five priority areas:
- Aboriginal leadership
- community-based programs
- healthy environments
- early prevention
- care and support.
Research and innovation will play an important role in supporting implementation of the Framework. Through the Future Health Research and Innovation (FHRI) Fund Spotlight Program, the WA Government is investing in collaborative research and innovation partnerships to help address rheumatic heart disease and improve outcomes for communities across Western Australia.
The Framework represents a significant milestone in the collective effort to prevent rheumatic heart disease and ensure all Western Australians have access to high-quality, culturally safe care and support.
